GM fell despite a beat and a $20 billion buyback. Two buyout firms reportedly bid for Qiagen. Brent swung about $6 between a five-month high and an unconfirmed peace report.
Small caps and blue chips led on Tuesday while the biggest tech stocks stalled.
The Dow rose about 1.0% to near 52,500, and the S&P 500 added about 0.3% to near 7,711. The Nasdaq Composite was little changed, and the Russell 2000 gained about 1.7%. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to 5.12%. Gold slipped to near $4,140, and bitcoin traded near $82,500.
Health-care stocks ran to the edge of a record, and small caps rose 1.7% in the same session.
Health care and small caps both led.
They usually lead on different kinds of days.

Earnings beats were not enough on Tuesday.
General Motors (GM) beat estimates and announced a new $20 billion buyback. Its full-year earnings midpoint rose 25 cents and still sits below consensus. GM said commodity inflation, including logistics and memory chips, now runs about $2 billion for the year. Its shares fell about 7%.
RTX (RTX) and Northrop Grumman (NOC) both reported record backlogs and raised forecasts. RTX beat estimates by 48 cents a share and Northrop by 71 cents. RTX's beat included 25 cents of tariff-cost recoveries, and its free cash flow fell 47%. Northrop rose about 5%, while RTX gave back most of an early gain. GE Aerospace (GE) raised its forecasts across the board and fell about 4%.
Paying for What Repeats
All four companies beat estimates. The stocks split, and the split lined up with what sat behind each beat. GM's profit midpoint stayed below consensus as costs climbed. RTX's beat leaned on tariff refunds, while Northrop's beat came with a 2027 growth outlook. If beats keep failing to lift shares, guidance and cash quality become the bar for the season.
Two takeover bids surfaced at prices that look different against older marks.
Qiagen traded within about a dollar of EQT's reported $50 floor. EQT has made a binding offer of more than $50 a share, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. KKR (KKR) has also bid, and the deal would value Qiagen at around $10 billion, according to the report. All three declined to comment. In 2020, a tender offer for Qiagen from another buyer lapsed after holders tendered about 47% of the shares.
Salesforce (CRM) agreed to buy Braze for $47.50 a share in cash, about $5.66 billion in enterprise value. That is 58% over Monday's close and still below Braze's $65 IPO price in 2021.
Premiums Against Old Prices
Braze holders from the 2021 listing are still about 27% below their entry. After months of takeover reports, Qiagen's shares sat within about $1.10 of the reported floor. Two buyout firms competing near $10 billion would show that large take-privates can be financed this quarter. The test at Qiagen is acceptance by a shareholder base that let the last offer lapse.

Oil and housing both softened, and forecasters had already closed ranks on a hike.
Brent covered about $6 in one session as reports of an Iran proposal circulated. Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, citing unnamed sources, reported that Qatar and Pakistan had put a compromise to both sides. Neither government confirmed it. A diplomat in the talks told Bloomberg that reports of a near deal were inaccurate, and Brent ended the stock session near $109.
Pending home sales fell 7.3% in September, against forecasts of about a 0.5% drop. In a Reuters poll taken Oct. 16 to 20, all 100 economists expect a December Fed hike. Fewer than half did a month ago.
Forecasters Were Already There
Two inputs to the inflation fight softened on the same day. Oil's steepest drop came as a report spread that no government confirmed, with no sign yet of ships returning to the strait. Forecasters had already moved to unanimity on a December increase. A lasting drop in oil would be the first real test of that view.
Iran bets bought the year-end window and round-tripped October.
Most of the year-end Iran blockade contract's gain came before the peace-plan report. On Polymarket, the Dec. 31 contract recovered an overnight dip, rising from about 34.5 cents to 38 cents by 9 a.m. The Oct. 31 version jumped to 14 cents on the report and fell back after the denial. Late in the day, December traded near 38 cents and October between 10 and 12. Both pay only on an official U.S. announcement ending the blockade.
A separate Polymarket contract on a Hormuz deal by Friday requires Iran to commit to shipping through the strait. Its "no agreement" outcome dipped to about 89 cents and was near 93 cents late in the day. The reported framework covered frozen funds and nuclear inspections.
Later, Not Sooner
Traders added to the November-December window and gave back the October gain. The gap between the two blockade contracts was near 27 cents late in the day, up from about 25 before dawn. Each contract carries less than $150,000 of liquidity, so a few orders can move it. Neither price is evidence that a deal is coming.

Webull's crypto perpetuals will trade and clear on Kalshi.
Webull plans to offer the contracts, which never expire, to eligible U.S. customers from November. They will list on KalshiEX and clear through Kalshi Klear, both regulated by the CFTC. Webull did not disclose leverage, fees or an exact launch date. CME Group (CME) is challenging in court the CFTC's approval of Kalshi's perpetuals.
Switzerland's regulator approved its first retail exchange-traded fund that holds bitcoin directly. The issuer expects it to list in November. Bitcoin notes already trade in Switzerland, but they carry the issuer's credit risk.
Event Venues Become Plumbing
A venue built on event contracts will supply both the exchange and the clearinghouse for a broker's crypto leverage. Switzerland moved bitcoin into a fund structure that banks already know how to sell. A ruling in CME's challenge would shape how far Kalshi's role can grow.
Tuesday's earnings beats split the stocks.
All four companies beat estimates, and only Northrop rose sharply. Braze's takeover price trails its IPO, and Qiagen's reported bidders face the test that sank a 2020 offer. Oil swung about $6 between a five-month high and an unconfirmed report. Iran traders leaned toward the year-end window.
Capital moves early. Coverage catches up. The gap between the two is worth watching.
