Adjusted earnings of 49 cents a share topped the 40-cent estimate and adjusted free cash flow of $4.7 billion far exceeded forecasts. Ford narrowed its 2026 profit outlook upward. Shares barely moved after hours.

Ford's third quarter was better than expected on nearly every measure. The stock's flat response suggests investors were more interested in what it said about 2027.

The carmaker reported adjusted earnings of 49 cents a share, against the 40 cents analysts polled by LSEG expected. Revenue was $46.08 billion, roughly in line with the $46.24 billion estimate. Adjusted free cash flow was $4.7 billion, against expectations of $2.7 billion.

The guidance

Ford raised the bottom of its 2026 adjusted EBIT forecast, now $10.5 billion to $11 billion from $10 billion to $11 billion, and kept its adjusted free cash flow guidance of $6 billion to $7 billion.

Its chief financial officer said 2027 adjusted EBIT would be roughly similar to 2026.

Why a beat did not move the stock

That last comment caps the story. A beat in the third quarter and a narrower range for the full year improve confidence in this year's numbers, but investors buying an automaker are often buying the next year. A forecast of flat profit in 2027 tells them the earnings base is stable rather than growing.

Free cash flow of $4.7 billion in a single quarter, against a full-year target of $6 billion to $7 billion, also raises the question of why the cash forecast was not raised. Timing of payments, working capital or spending later in the year could explain it.

The reaction

Ford closed Wednesday at $11.93, up 1.9%, and was indicated near $11.96 early Thursday, up 0.2%.

The contrast with the European carmakers this week is sharp. Stellantis's U.S. shares rose about 13% on Wednesday after a quarter in which it burned 4 billion euros of cash, as results beat very low expectations. Ford beat higher expectations and the stock did not move.

Steady or stuck?

The steady view: Ford is generating cash, beating estimates and has narrowed its outlook upward, and flat profit next year at this level supports dividends and investment.

The stuck view: without growth in 2027, the stock lacks a catalyst, and a cash beat that does not lift full-year cash guidance suggests the fourth quarter may be weaker.
