Boston Scientific Fell as Much as 12% and Then Recovered Most of It. The Guidance Cut Is Still There

Third-quarter sales rose 1.5% to $5.14 billion and adjusted earnings were 73 cents a share, below the company's own forecast. The medical-device maker lowered its full-year outlook again, TheFly reported.

Boston Scientific traveled a long way on Wednesday morning and ended up close to where it started.

The medical-device maker reported third-quarter net sales of $5.14 billion, up 1.5% on a reported, operational and organic basis. GAAP net income fell to $582 million, or 40 cents a share, from $755 million, or 51 cents. Adjusted earnings were 73 cents a share, against 75 cents a year earlier. That was roughly in line with the 72 cents in TheFly's and FMP's consensus figures, though Zacks had 76 cents, and below the 80 to 82 cents the company had guided.

Lower again

Boston Scientific lowered its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to $3.16 to $3.18 a share from $3.28 to $3.32, below the $3.23 analysts expected, and cut its full-year revenue growth forecast to about 4.25% from 5.5% to 6.5%, TheFly reported. The Wall Street Journal tied the latest cut, the second, to a cyberattack and other challenges. The company said on its call that results had been affected by a "previously reported" event.

The round trip

The shares closed Tuesday at $45.06. They were indicated about 11% lower before the open, fell as low as $39.57, down 12.2% and a new 52-week low, and then recovered to about $43.37 in early afternoon, down about 3.8%, on about 40 million shares.

One explanation is that buyers stepped in once the stock had priced the guidance cut, rather than because the outlook improved. The session did not settle the question.

How much is temporary?

The view that the damage is temporary: the quarter's shortfall is tied to a specific event, sales still grew, adjusted earnings matched most consensus estimates, and the stock's recovery from its low shows demand for the name at a lower price.

The view that it is more than that: this is the second guidance cut, growth has slowed to 1.5%, the quarter missed the company's own forecast by about 10%, and the full effect of the disruption is not yet clear.

What to watch

Detail on the cyberattack's financial impact in the company's quarterly filing, trends in its key heart-device franchises, any early outlook for 2027, and whether the shares hold above Wednesday's low.
