Polymarket's contract on Christine Lagarde being out as ECB president in 2026 priced Yes at 100 cents after her announcement, because its rules count an announcement, not a departure. A new market on her successor opened with little trading.
Christine Lagarde will still be president of the European Central Bank on New Year's Day. A prediction market that asks whether she will be "out as ECB president in 2026" has nonetheless priced the answer at yes.
The ECB said on Thursday that Lagarde will step down on Feb. 7, 2027. Polymarket's contract titled "Christine Lagarde out as ECB president in 2026?" then traded at 100 cents for yes. A second contract, on her leaving by March 31, 2027, also priced yes at 100 cents.
The fine print
The explanation is in the rules. "An announcement of Lagarde's resignation/removal before this market's end date will immediately resolve this market to 'Yes', regardless of when the announced resignation/removal goes into effect," the contract states. The resolution source is official information from Lagarde and the ECB, or a consensus of credible reporting.
Read on its title alone, the contract would point the other way: Lagarde remains in office through early February 2027. Read on its rules, Thursday's announcement should settle it, though the venue's formal resolution had not been confirmed.
Why it matters for traders
Prediction-market contracts settle on their rules, not their headlines. In fast-moving situations, such as an election deadlock, a ceasefire deadline or a resignation, the gap between what a contract seems to ask and what it actually pays on can be large. Anyone holding "no" on the reasonable assumption that a 2027 departure means she is not out in 2026 is likely on the losing side.
The same lesson applies across venues. On Israel, Polymarket and Kalshi contracts on the next prime minister differ by more than 20 points largely because they define the outcome differently.
The next market
Polymarket opened a new market on who will be the next ECB president on Thursday. It had about $900 of volume in its first hours, too little for its prices to mean much. European Council President António Costa said the selection process would begin immediately.
Markets were calm about the change itself. The euro was little changed against the dollar in early afternoon, at about $1.117.
What to watch
Formal resolution of the 2026 contract, trading in the successor market as candidates emerge, the European Council's timetable, and the ECB's December meeting.
