Cohere Is Raising Up to C$7 Billion, With Canada's Government Among the Investors. The Price Is Roughly Triple Last Year's

The Canadian AI developer said it completed the first close of a Series E round that would value it at C$35.7 billion if fully raised. Schwarz Group, a European retail group, is leading. Ottawa is taking an equity stake in exchange for commitments to keep the company in Canada.

Cohere's new funding round is being led by a supermarket group, with a government among the new investors.

The Canadian AI company said on Thursday it completed the initial close of a Series E round "targeting up to CAD $7 billion, which would represent a CAD $35.7 billion valuation." The round is led by "the companies of Schwarz Group," the European retail group. New investors include Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital and the Government of Canada. Inovia Capital, Nvidia and Prosperity7 Ventures returned. Cohere called it the largest private financing round by a Canadian technology company.

The company did not say how much it has raised so far.

The government's role

Canada's federal government will provide up to about C$1.6 billion of equity in exchange for a stake and commitments to keep Cohere headquartered in Canada, The Logic reported. The size of the stake has not been disclosed.

What the valuation means

Bloomberg reported that Cohere is raising at a valuation of about $20.5 billion, roughly triple its value a year ago. The two figures are likely measuring different things. Subtracting the C$7 billion target from C$35.7 billion leaves C$28.7 billion, about US$20.5 billion at current exchange rates, by our arithmetic. That suggests the U.S.-dollar figure is a pre-money valuation, and the Canadian figure assumes the full round is raised.

Cohere was valued at $6.8 billion in August 2025 and about $7 billion after an extension that September.

A strategic structure

Schwarz committed 500 million euros as the Series E lead in April, which Cohere described at the time as "structured financing" rather than a straightforward equity purchase. Cohere also signed a definitive agreement in September to combine with Aleph Alpha, subject to regulatory approval.

Taken together, the investor list points to a company positioning itself as a non-U.S. supplier of AI models for governments and large enterprises that want an alternative to American developers.

Sovereign premium or strategic price?

The sovereign view: a government taking equity and a European retail group leading the round signal durable demand for AI that is built and controlled outside the United States, and those investors may stay for the long term.

The pricing question: strategic and government investors may value national or commercial goals as well as returns, the amount raised so far is undisclosed, and the full valuation depends on the round reaching its C$7 billion target.

What to watch

Subsequent closes and the total raised, the terms of the government's stake, regulatory approval for the Aleph Alpha combination, and how the price compares with other recent AI rounds.
