The AI chip developer raised $1.5 billion in a Series E round led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with ARK, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, T. Rowe Price, Sandisk and Tether Investments among the investors. Post-money, the valuation is about 2.3 times December 2024's. Measured on the new pre-money value, the increase is about 1.75 times.

Public investors spent last week selling chip stocks. Private investors just valued a chip startup at more than twice what they did less than two years ago.

Tenstorrent has raised $1.5 billion in a Series E round at a post-money valuation of $6.2 billion. The round was led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with participation from ARK Invest, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, T. Rowe Price, Sandisk and Tether Investments. In December 2024, the company raised about $693 million at a pre-money valuation of $2 billion.

Two ways to measure the step-up

That earlier round implies a post-money valuation of about $2.7 billion, by this publication's arithmetic, so the headline valuation rose about 2.3 times. But part of the new $6.2 billion is the $1.5 billion of fresh cash. The more useful comparison for what investors are paying per share is the new pre-money value, about $4.7 billion, against the earlier post-money value. On that basis the increase is about 1.75 times.

Both numbers are real. The first says the company is much bigger. The second says how much more a new investor paid for each piece of it than the last round did.

The timing

The raise lands at an awkward moment for the sector. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 11.4% last week, closing lower for eight straight sessions, before rebounding about 1.8% by early afternoon on Monday. Much of the debate around the selling has centered on how the AI build-out will be financed and whether returns will justify the spending.

A large private round at a higher valuation suggests that investors with long horizons still see room for new chip designs, particularly from companies offering alternatives to the dominant suppliers of AI accelerators. The investor list mixes crossover funds that buy both private and public shares, a large bank, a memory chip maker and a stablecoin issuer's investment arm.

The investor mix

Sandisk's participation stands out. A memory maker investing in an AI chip developer points to strategic interest in how future AI systems will be built, and Sandisk was among the strongest performers in Monday's chip rebound.

Tenstorrent licenses its TT-Ascalon RISC-V CPU and Tensix AI cores to chip designers including Samsung and LG. Beyond naming those licensees, the company did not disclose revenue, customer counts or profitability in the round announcement, so the valuation cannot be compared with public peers on an operating measure.

Market implications

One reading is that private investors are looking through the public market's volatility. A 1.75 times step-up per share in under two years, with blue-chip investors participating, shows conviction that demand for AI computing will support new entrants.

A second reading is that private valuations are lagging the public reset. Public chip stocks have just been repriced, and a private round at a higher valuation may face a tougher test if the company later seeks a listing.

What to watch

Any disclosure of Tenstorrent's revenue or customer metrics; further large private rounds for AI chip developers; the performance of public chip stocks after this week's big technology earnings; and any move by Tenstorrent toward a public listing. A down round at a comparable AI chip company would show whether private valuations are holding up.
