TQ Evening Briefing

Boeing fell 10.7% and the Dow went nowhere, while chips lifted the Nasdaq 1.2%. Meta finished below its own offer price, and Fed hike bets fell by a third as the five-year auction drew more foreign demand.

The Setup

Chips Carried the Nasdaq. Boeing Held Down the Dow.

Stocks rose unevenly. The Nasdaq gained 1.2% and the Russell 2000 1.2%. The S&P 500 added 0.6%, and the Dow finished effectively unchanged.

Chips did the lifting. The iShares Semiconductor ETF rose 4.0%, with AMD (AMD) up 5.5% and Broadcom (AVGO) up 4.0%. Boeing (BA), a Dow member, fell 10.7% after its results. In the price-weighted Dow, Boeing's $20.13 drop outweighed Nvidia's (NVDA) $1.94 gain about ten to one.

Energy went the other way. U.S. crude slipped about 1.5% to near $100 late in the day. The energy sector ETF fell 2.0%, and Valero (VLO) dropped 9.2%.

Bonds barely moved on a strong data day. Consumer confidence jumped to 91.7, far above the 81 economists expected, yet the 10-year Treasury yield closed at 4.99%, about where it started. The VIX fell about 5% as the Fed began its two-day meeting.

TQ Trade Implication

The day's spread came from single companies, not from rates. With the 10-year unmoved by a confidence beat of nearly 11 points, index direction depended on which heavyweights reported or rallied. In a price-weighted index, a $20 drop in one stock can outweigh a broad rally elsewhere. Into the Fed decision, stock selection is doing the work that duration is not.

Theme One

The Market Paid for Next Year and Charged for This One.

Boeing posted a record $745 billion backlog and a second straight quarter of positive free cash flow. The stock still fell 10.7% to $168.18. Its core loss of 34 cents a share was wider than the 21 cents analysts expected, according to LSEG. The commercial airplane unit ran at a negative 6.5% operating margin, which Boeing tied to a less favorable delivery mix and higher projected production and supply-chain costs.

SoFi (SOFI) went the other way. It gave a first look at 2027: about $6.4 billion in revenue and about 90 cents a share in earnings, up from the 61 cents it expects this year. The stock rose 13.4%. Celestica (CLS) held most of its early jump and closed up 11.9% on its $40 billion 2027 outlook.

UPS (UPS) raised its forecast again and gained 5.8%, though its adjusted operating margin narrowed to 9.0% from 10.0%. Xylem (XYL) showed the reverse. Its orders rose 7%, but revenue fell 3% and it cut its full-year forecast. The stock lost 14.2%.

TQ Execution Bias

Tuesday priced each report on next year's numbers, not the quarter just ended. An order book earns nothing until it converts at a margin, and Boeing and Xylem both showed that conversion slipping. SoFi and Celestica put figures on 2027, which gave buyers something specific to pay for. For now, a dated forecast beats a record backlog.

Theme Two

Meta Priced Stock at $625. It Closed at $620.

Meta priced $25 billion of common stock at $625 a share, upsized from $22.5 billion, plus $12.5 billion of mandatory convertible preferred paying 6.5%. Nvidia said it will invest $3 billion in the offering. AMD said it will invest $1 billion.

Meta (META) closed at $620.19, down 1.6% and below the $625 offer price set hours earlier. Its suppliers rallied. AMD rose 5.5%, Broadcom 4.0% and Nvidia 0.9%.

The common is sold through forward agreements, so Meta collects no cash when the offering closes on Thursday and can settle any time up to Nov. 19, 2027. The preferred delivers cash at Thursday's closing, at about $813 million a year in dividends. Meta expects $135 billion to $145 billion of capital spending this year. In the third quarter alone, capital spending of $34.91 billion exceeded operating cash flow of $32.79 billion.

TQ Edge Setup

The deal priced, and the market put Meta's stock below it the same day. Forward sales delay the cash and the new shares, but the $625 price is already fixed. A close under that line means public holders valued Meta below the offer price. If the gap holds, the next round of funding for the buildout will cost Meta more stock per dollar than this one did.

Theme Three

The Hike Bet Lost a Third. Foreign Buyers Came Back for the Five-Year.

Kalshi's contract on a quarter-point hike Wednesday traded at 5 to 6 cents late Tuesday, down from 9 cents on Monday. Traders bought about 140,000 contracts at 7 cents in ten minutes at midday, and the price did not move. Polymarket's no-change contract traded near 95 cents.

The Treasury's $70 billion five-year sale drew more foreign demand than Monday's two-year. It cleared at 4.845%, down from 5.033% in September, with bids covering it 2.33 times. Indirect bidders, which include foreign buyers, took about 60%, against 45.7% at the two-year sale.

On the Treasury's daily curve, the five-year yield slipped 2 basis points to 4.82%, while the two-year rose 2 to 4.70%.

The data still gave hawks material. Confidence reached its best level since June, and consumers expect 5.8% inflation over the next year. The Conference Board tied the rebound to cheaper gasoline.

TQ Edge Setup

Traders read the day as a hold, even with confidence back at June levels. The five-year drew the foreign demand Monday's two-year lacked, and 140,000 contracts of midday buying failed to lift the hike contract, which slipped later in the day. Inflation expectations of 5.8% keep the hawkish case alive in the data, but nobody paid up for it. Only a hike would now surprise a market that spent Tuesday selling that bet.

Quick Themes
  • Ares Capital agreed to buy a rival fund below its stated value. Ares Capital (ARCC) agreed to buy Apollo-managed MidCap Financial Investment (MFIC) for $10.88 a share: $1.21 in cash from its adviser, a unit of Ares Management (ARES), plus about $9.67 in stock. That is 30.1% over Monday's close but about 15% below MFIC's preliminary net asset value. Because the stock portion is counted at Ares Capital's book value, and its shares trade below book, the package was worth about $10.48 at the close. MFIC rose 22.7%. Apollo (APO) keeps its MidCap Financial lending platform.
  • Robinhood's prediction markets out-earned crypto. Robinhood (HOOD) reported record revenue of $1.42 billion after the close, up 12%. Event-contract revenue rose more than sixfold to $173 million, while crypto revenue fell 55% to $120 million. Diluted earnings fell 16% to 51 cents a share, and the stock traded about 4% lower after hours.
  • Israel's odds whipsawed on the exit polls. Polymarket priced Gadi Eisenkot at about 55 cents to become prime minister early Tuesday. After exit polls on Israel's main channels showed neither bloc reaching 61 seats, with Likud the largest party, Eisenkot's contract dropped to about 33 cents within minutes, then rebounded to about 50 cents. Benjamin Netanyahu traded near 31 cents. The contracts pay on who is sworn in, which can take weeks of coalition talks.
  • Bitcoin and gold still trail. Bitcoin ended near $80,600, up 0.8%. It and gold were the two worst of 21 major assets in one strategist's table this year through Oct. 23.

The Close

The Fed Gets the Last Word on a Company Day.

Tuesday sorted stocks by what they said about next year, and bonds ignored the best confidence reading since June. Hike bets fell by a third, and the five-year drew more foreign buyers than the two-year.

Wednesday's decision is the cleanest test. A hold leaves the tape trading guidance, chips and Meta's $625 line. A hike would hit a market that spent Tuesday betting against one.
