RLUSD is live on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp and is expected in the Robinhood app later this year. BNY now holds XRP and RLUSD in custody and intends to let clients mint and redeem the token through the bank.
Ripple spent Monday night announcing a federal charter for the reserves behind its stablecoin. It spent Tuesday morning lining up places to sell it.
At the opening of its Swell conference, Ripple announced two partnerships for RLUSD, its dollar stablecoin, which has a market value of about $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion by Ripple's figures.
Robinhood will make RLUSD a key stablecoin across its businesses, the companies said. RLUSD is live on Robinhood Chain and on Bitstamp by Robinhood, and it is expected to be available in the Robinhood app later this year. Bitstamp will use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement. Robinhood will also run its own treasury operations on Ripple Treasury, Ripple's software for cash management, forecasting, payments and intercompany netting. Robinhood had 28.6 million funded customers as of August.
BNY, already the primary custodian of RLUSD's reserves, added XRP and RLUSD to its institutional digital-asset custody platform. It intends to work with Ripple to let BNY clients mint and redeem RLUSD directly through the bank. The two are also exploring tokenized trade finance, starting with a pilot in which C2FO would move the financing and settlement of its Instant Pay product onto the XRP Ledger using RLUSD.
Why distribution matters
For a stablecoin, the technology is largely interchangeable. What decides market share is where people can get it and how easily they can turn it back into dollars. A retail brokerage with tens of millions of customers and a global custody bank that may let institutions create and redeem tokens directly are two of the most important channels a dollar token can sign.
Taken together with Monday's charter, the pieces form a bank-style stack: a federally supervised trust bank for the reserves, BNY for institutional access, and Robinhood for retail.
What the deals are not
Much of the language is forward-looking. RLUSD is not yet in the Robinhood app. BNY "intends" to enable minting and redemption, and its clients cannot do that today. The C2FO arrangement is a pilot. None of the companies disclosed financial terms or expected volumes.
The announcements assign XRP no specific role beyond custody at BNY, though the Robinhood release says RLUSD and XRP together underpin the services and settlement runs on the XRP Ledger. Neither announcement says Robinhood will use the XRP token for payments.
The market
Robinhood shares rose 3.2% to $95.85 at about 1:51 p.m. Eastern, ahead of its third-quarter results after the close, so the gain cannot be tied to the deal alone. XRP was about $1.32, up 1.5% from early morning.
Two readings
One reading is that RLUSD has made a real leap in reach. A broker, a custody bank and a trade-finance platform signed on in one morning, a day after the charter, and that is the kind of distribution that lets a smaller stablecoin compete for balances.
The other is that these are conference-timed announcements with conditional language. The app launch is months away, the bank's mint-and-redeem service is an intention, the trade-finance work is a pilot, and at about $2.5 billion RLUSD is still small.
What to watch
Robinhood's results and call on Tuesday evening, RLUSD's supply over the coming weeks, the timing of the Robinhood app launch and BNY's mint-and-redeem service, the remaining days of Swell, and Circle's results on Nov. 4.
