Revenue rose 106% and the next guide reached $108 billion. Gross margin is guided to 74%. The two-year gave back seven basis points.

THE DAILY PULSE

Equities sat still through Wednesday. The number that mattered landed after the bell.

Stocks finished Wednesday near where they opened, and crude eased again. Bonds had done their moving a day earlier.

Tuesday's curve fell at every maturity, and the two-year fell furthest. It gave back seven basis points to 4.17%. Fed funds held at 3.63% effective, so nothing at the anchor changed.

That is a front end taking a view at last. What it is pricing is the open question. Nvidia answered part of it after Wednesday's close, and the answer was about cost.

Now he's doing the same with AI.

THE LEAD SIGNAL

Wednesday evening's record quarter came with a thinner margin behind it.

Nvidia (NVDA) booked $96.2 billion of revenue, up 106% on the year. Data center revenue reached $89 billion, up 117%. The company guided the current quarter to $108 billion. That adds nearly twelve billion dollars to the top line.

Then came the cost line, and gross margin matched guidance. The next quarter is guided to 74%, a point lower. Finance chief Colette Kress said memory pricing had run past expectations.

The company also put next year's revenue growth near seventy percent. It said supply stays the bottleneck. Its outlook assumes no data center compute revenue from China. Export policy sets that line, not Nvidia. Shares had closed lower on the day, then rose after the release.

The Bill Inside the Beat

For three years this was a demand story. It is a procurement story now. Nvidia sets its selling price. Its input cost and its addressable market are set elsewhere. A point of gross margin is where that shows first.

THE ARCHITECTURE

An AI rack runs on two inputs.

A chip company sells one.

Compute is a power business, and utilities set that price. Every new gigawatt buys at the going rate.

The same grid serves the household meter. Kalshi prices the August US city average for retail electricity. Above 19.6 cents a kilowatt-hour, the odds sit above 60%.

That is the household half of the same demand. It is also the half a federal agency publishes every month.

Retail power is a consumer price. It lands in the index the Fed watches.

The Meter Behind the Rack

Chip supply gets the headline. Power gets the invoice. A gigawatt is a purchase order with no fixed price. The limiting variable is not silicon, it is the bill underneath.

THE CROSS-CURRENTS

Three July trade files describe one month.

One is already out. Two arrive before lunch.

The price file came out on the eighteenth. Export prices rose 8.2% over the year. Import prices rose 5.9%. The country is charging more than it pays.

Prices are one half of a trade file. Volumes are the other. Next is the volume file, July's advance goods trade. That lands at half past eight. Preliminary steel imports follow at ten.

Kalshi prices the container side at New York and New Jersey. The odds of nine million boxes this year sit near one in four. A trade file measures what moved and never what the route cost. Polymarket prices one open question behind that cost. The odds of a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire by March 2027 sit near 37%. That is seven points lower than a day ago.

Nobody has narrowed the year yet. Today's file is the first read that could.

The Rate and the Size

A price index gives the rate and never the size. July's price file is public and its volume file is not. A national margin measured on prices alone is a guess about scale. Today's number supplies the missing half.

THE FORETELL LENS

A gross margin is where an input cost stops or moves on.

Nvidia can guide a point lower and lose no orders. Apple (AAPL) had less room and published the arithmetic.

Memory costs explained more than its whole June margin step. Apple counts three suppliers in that market. So one input reaches two balance sheets and lands differently.

Who has no room at all is the open question. A price list moves in steps. A closed route moves all at once. Polymarket prices that second kind. The odds of a NATO and Russia military clash before November sit near 20%.

Producer prices for final demand rose 4.7% over the year. Consumer prices rose less than that.

The Last Margin in the Chain

Cost inflation does not vanish. It sits on a chain of margins until somebody cannot carry it. A wide margin absorbs the first increase as a point of guidance. A narrow one has to publish it as a price.

FINAL FRAME

Wednesday's tape held.

The margin behind it did not. The record quarter and the thinner guide came from one release. Both are true.

Two July trade files land today, at half past eight and ten. Weekly claims come with them. The front end moved once already this week.

Every one of those numbers is somebody's bill. Capital moves early. Coverage catches up. The gap between the two is worth watching.
