The cybersecurity company promoted its head of worldwide sales to chief revenue officer. Shares fell about 8.6%.
Zscaler named a new chief revenue officer on Thursday evening. Investors reacted on Friday as if the change mattered more than a routine succession.
The cybersecurity company said Mike Rich is stepping down as chief revenue officer "for personal reasons" and will remain a strategic adviser through Dec. 31. Ross Tackett, currently head of worldwide sales, will take over the role on Oct. 1.
Zscaler shares fell about 8.6% to near $196.10 in afternoon trading, while a broad software fund slipped less than 0.4%.
The history
The reaction reflects what happened in May. When Zscaler reported fiscal third-quarter results on May 26, it disclosed the departure of two sales leaders who had worked under Rich, along with a growth framework of 16% to 17% for fiscal 2027. The stock fell about 31.5% the next day. Rich's exit is now the third senior change in the same sales organization in about four months.
The company has given no reason for the departure beyond the one in its release, and the timing alone does not supply one.
Two views
The internal promotion supports the case for continuity. Tackett already runs worldwide sales, so the reporting lines under him are familiar and Rich stays on in an advisory role for three months. Some analysts have described the change as low-disruption.
The opposing view is that repeated turnover in the team responsible for hitting a 16% to 17% growth target raises questions about execution, whatever the reasons for each individual departure.
Zscaler's next quarterly report, its first with Tackett in the role, will provide the relevant evidence. Billings and pipeline commentary against the fiscal 2027 framework will show whether the sales organization is steady or still in transition.
