Vanguard Is Buying a Fintech Platform for Financial Advisors

Vanguard announced it will acquire Altruist, a custodial and portfolio-management platform for independent advisors, which will continue operating as a standalone business.

Vanguard announced it will acquire Altruist, an AI-enabled custodial and portfolio-management platform built for independent financial advisors. Altruist will continue operating as a standalone business, retaining its own brand and leadership team, with the deal expected to close later in 2026 subject to customary conditions and regulatory approval. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Vanguard is the world's second-largest asset manager, and its decision to acquire a technology platform built specifically to serve independent advisors, rather than build one internally or continue routing advisor business through its existing custodial infrastructure, marks a structural push into financial advice.

The decision to keep Altruist operating standalone is itself informative. An acquirer intending to fully absorb a platform into its existing operations typically signals that intent early; keeping Altruist independent suggests Vanguard is preserving optionality, either to let Altruist continue serving advisors who use competing custodians, or to avoid disrupting a platform whose value depends partly on its neutrality. Which reading proves correct will likely become clearer once the deal closes and any integration plans become public.
