Valero earned $23.90 a share on an adjusted basis, beating forecasts by about 13%. Shares opened at their high and slid more than 3%, along with other refiners, as Brent rose above $112.
Valero Energy reported a quarter several times stronger than a year ago. Its stock fell anyway.
The refiner earned $6.8 billion, or $23.90 a share on an adjusted basis, in the third quarter, compared with $3.66 a year earlier and the consensus estimate of $21.17. Refining margin came to $10.73 billion, up from $3.73 billion, or $39.24 a barrel against $13.14 a year earlier. Throughput was about 2.97 million barrels a day.
For the first nine months of the year, adjusted earnings per share totaled $40.22, versus $6.82 in the same period of 2025.
The price reaction
Shares opened at $439.55, the high of the day, and then sold off. At 1:46 p.m. Eastern they were at $422.65, down 3.2% from Wednesday's close, after dipping as low as $416.41. Marathon Petroleum fell 2.1% and Phillips 66 3.1%. The stock has risen from a 52-week low of $159.90, so the move came after a large run.
Why a blowout quarter did not lift the stock
The decline was shared across refiners, which points to something beyond Valero's report. The most visible candidate is the price of crude. Brent climbed more than 3% to about $112.75 a barrel on Thursday. Refiners profit from the spread between what they pay for crude and what they get for gasoline and diesel. When crude spikes on supply fears, investors may worry that the cost side will rise faster than product prices can follow.
A second reading is simpler: after the share price more than doubled from its low, a strong quarter was already expected, and investors used the open to take profits.
Both explanations fit the tape. The quarter's strength is not in doubt; what investors are questioning is how long margins this wide can last.
What to watch
Crack spreads, the margin between crude and refined products, as oil trades above $110. Valero's comments on fourth-quarter throughput and capital returns will matter more than the third quarter now that it is in hand.
