Ulta Beat Estimates and Raised Guidance. Its Stock Dipped Anyway, on Very Thin Trading.

Ulta Beauty's second quarter beat expectations on sales, comparable sales and profit, and the company raised its full-year outlook. Its stock still traded modestly lower before Friday's open, though thin premarket volume makes the move hard to read cleanly.

Ulta Beauty reported second-quarter net sales of $3.0 billion, up 8.9% from a year earlier and ahead of the roughly $2.96 billion analysts expected. Comparable sales rose 3.8% and operating profit grew 10.1%. Diluted earnings of $6.55 a share, up 13.3% from a year earlier, beat a consensus estimate of about $6.20. The company raised its full-year earnings guidance to $28.70-$29.00 a share, up from $28.36-$28.80.

Despite the clean beat and raise, Ulta's stock traded modestly lower in Friday's premarket session, down roughly 2% to 3% from Thursday's regular-session close. That reaction should be read with real caution: premarket trading in Ulta's stock this morning showed unusually wide bid-ask spreads and thin volume, including at least one quoted bid for as little as a single share, conditions that make any percentage move an unreliable guide to what the stock will actually do once the regular session opens.

With that caveat in place, the direction of the move is still notable, because it echoes a pattern showing up elsewhere in this week's retail and software earnings: strong headline results followed by a flat-to-negative reaction rather than a rally.

Given the thin trading conditions, the more reliable test of how the market actually feels about this quarter arrives once Friday's regular session opens and volume normalizes. Until then, this is a beat-and-raise quarter with a soft premarket reaction worth watching, not yet a confirmed verdict.
