Good morning. For two years, a dollar of AI spending read as a promise. This week it started reading as a bill.
Three of the biggest spenders reported, and investors went straight to the cash line. Yet four out of five stocks in the S&P 500 rose on Thursday. The selling has a narrow address.
October ends today. The question is whether that address holds through the last session of the month.
Our call is below.
The AI selloff is a cash repricing of a few spenders, and falling yields are paying the rest of the market
Amazon.com (AMZN) posted its highest operating margin ever, and AWS grew 39%. The stock still fell about 7% overnight, near $226.70, after a slightly soft quarter and forecast. The bigger concern is cash. Over 12 months, free cash flow was an outflow of $42.4 billion, against an inflow of $14.8 billion a year earlier. Spending on property and equipment rose by $94.8 billion, and Jassy indicated 2027 spending will be meaningfully higher.
Alphabet (GOOGL) lost 12.6% on Thursday after a second straight quarter of negative free cash flow. It raised about $41 billion in bonds and new stock to fund the build-out. Microsoft (MSFT), which still produced $18.6 billion of free cash flow, held flat. Intel (INTC) is a different story. Its 26% overnight drop traces to a PC slowdown and a plant explosion in Israel, while its data center sales rose 78%.
The mechanism is a change in what investors count. Capital spending used to read as proof of demand. Now it reads as cash leaving the building. Once free cash flow turns negative, the spending needs outside money. Microsoft's first U.S. bond sale since 2017 drew about $115 billion of orders, so lenders are willing. Shareholders are asking for a return.
The bond market sees the other side. Third-quarter GDP grew 3.4%, and the government says equipment investment was led by computers. If the spenders slow down, a pillar of that growth weakens. That helps explain why Treasuries rallied as AI stocks fell. The 10-year traded near 4.94% early Friday, its lowest since mid-September. Futures price about a 75% chance of a December hike, down from about 85% on Wednesday.
Lower yields reach everyone who borrows. On Thursday the equal-weight S&P 500 fund rose 1.2% while the cap-weighted fund fell 0.4%. Small caps, banks and real estate gained.
What would change the read is the 8:30 a.m. employment cost index. A hot wage print would lift yields and take away the cushion the rest of the market is leaning on.
The call is that the repricing stays concentrated in the spenders. Expect QQQ to close at least 1 percentage point worse than RSP on the day, from Thursday's $715.34 and $220.04. Expect the 10-year to close at or below Thursday's 4.98% Treasury close. Position for a market that sorts AI spenders by free cash flow.

By our count, 406 of 503 S&P 500 stocks rose while the index fell. Members above their 50-day average stood at 65%. Health care closed within a dollar of its 52-week high. The Russell 2000 fund (IWM) gained 1%.
The group worth your attention is crypto, because two shocks hit it within about an hour. Bitcoin's first leg down came as Amazon and Intel reported, before Binance acknowledged a breach. Binance later put the impact near $6.3 billion. BNB, the coin tied to Binance, fell further than bitcoin. Bitcoin was near $77,200 early Friday, about 2% above Strategy's average cost of roughly $75,446.
Coinbase (COIN) shows what the business is becoming. Its revenue fell 35% from a year ago, and half now comes from something other than trading. Prediction markets passed $200 million of annualized revenue, while private rival Kalshi was valued at $40 billion this week. Coinbase was indicated about 5% lower and Strategy (MSTR) about 7%.
Crypto stocks are trading first as Nasdaq beta and second as exchange risk. If bitcoin holds $75,446 while QQQ falls, the selling is borrowed from tech. A break below it with BNB leading would point to the breach.

Spread of the day. December Brent against December 2027, the cleanest read on whether this is a shortage now or later. Early Friday the expiring contract traded near $116.45 and next December near $87.96, a gap of about $28.50. Brent is up more than 12% in October, heading for a fourth straight monthly gain. Crude rose overnight after the Wall Street Journal reported that a top U.S. commander had briefed Trump on military options against Iran. Iran says it received a U.S. letter and has not replied.
The curve says the pain is in this winter's barrels, which land on refiners, airlines and freight first. Producers tend to budget off longer-dated prices, and the back end sits near $88. Today's Exxon and Chevron calls show whether that still holds. A final settle gap under $25 would suggest some of the premium is leaving; above $30, prompt tightness is deepening.

The signal. [Reddit (RDDT) grew revenue 53% and lost 23% overnight](https://www.financialmarkets.com/article/reddit-grew-revenue-53-and-lost-23-overnight-four-internet-stocks-fell-on-what-t). Daily users came in at 130.3 million against 137 million expected, and U.S. users fell 2%. Chief Executive Huffman blamed fewer referrals from Google as AI answers keep readers on the search page.
So what. This is AI as a toll on the open web. When search answers the question itself, sites that earn money from visits lose the visit. Pinterest (PINS) fell 9% after hours on its own miss, and the ad-funded group is being repriced together. The irony links to the Setup. Alphabet's AI answers are taking the traffic, yet Alphabet was marked down for what those answers cost to build. If Huffman is right, readers are moving to the answer engine before its owner has shown the return.
Frontier watch. Three things not yet priced. Reddit's login test outside the U.S. this quarter, which shows whether it can hold readers who arrive less often. Alphabet's ad growth after ads came in about $1.4 billion short of estimates. And Amazon's 2027 capital spending figure, which Jassy has only described as meaningfully higher.
The marker. Reddit's close. Below $97, the market treats lost referrals as structural. Above $110, it was an overreaction to one forecast. Between them, undecided.

Forget forecasts. What did you do with your megacap tech exposure this month?
