The newly approved Comirnaty formula targets the XFG variant and is cleared for adults 65 and older and younger people with underlying health risks, arriving with time to spare before the season that drives most of the companies' annual Covid-vaccine demand.
The FDA has approved an updated formulation of Pfizer and BioNTech's Comirnaty Covid-19 vaccine, targeting the XFG variant lineage the agency identified as more representative of currently circulating strains. The approval covers adults 65 and older, and people ages 5 to 64 with at least one underlying condition that raises their risk of severe Covid-19, a narrower population than earlier formulations, reflecting the FDA's continued move toward risk-based rather than universal Covid vaccination recommendations.
Pfizer and BioNTech said the update rests on a "cumulative body of evidence" combining clinical, non-clinical and real-world data, and that the new formula produced strong immune responses against XFG and several related sublineages now circulating. Doses are already shipping to pharmacies, hospitals and clinics for the fall vaccination season, the period that has historically driven the bulk of both companies' Covid-vaccine revenue each year.
More than five billion Comirnaty doses have been distributed globally since the vaccine's original authorization, but each year's approval cycle now matters as much for its timing as for the underlying science. Getting an updated formula cleared and into pharmacies before the fall season opens is what determines whether Pfizer and BioNTech capture that year's vaccination volume at all. This year's approval lands with time to spare before peak fall demand.
