The AI infrastructure company earned $1.00 a share against a 77-cent forecast and guided to about $2.43 billion of sales. Rosenblatt sees $100. Barclays sees $60 and a lower gross margin.

Penguin Solutions gave investors a beat and an outlook on Tuesday evening. By Wednesday afternoon, Wall Street had produced price targets that stretch from well above the stock to well below it.

For its fiscal fourth quarter, the company, which builds platforms for artificial-intelligence data centers, reported net sales of $566.7 million, about $45.7 million, or 8.8%, above the $521 million analysts expected. Adjusted earnings were $1.00 a share, against a 77-cent estimate.

For fiscal 2027, Penguin guided to net sales of about $2.43 billion at the midpoint and adjusted earnings of about $4.45 a share.

The stock rose about 12.2% to $72.03 by about 2:10 p.m. Eastern. It had gained about 6% in extended trading early Wednesday.

The run rate

The fourth quarter alone, multiplied by four, would come to about $2.27 billion. The $2.43 billion outlook is about 7% above that run rate. That means the guidance assumes sales continue at roughly the pace just reported, with modest growth from there, rather than a further acceleration.

At $72.03, the stock trades at about 16.2 times the company's earnings outlook for the coming year.

The targets

Four firms with buy ratings published new targets. Rosenblatt set $100, about 39% above Wednesday's price. Stifel, Goldman Sachs and Needham each set $85, about 18% above it. Barclays, which rates the shares underweight, set $60, about 17% below, and said it expects the company's gross margin to step down.

The $40 range between the highest and lowest targets is more than half the share price.

Where views split

One reading, held by the buy-rated firms, is that a large beat and a full-year outlook already above the fourth-quarter run rate leave room for upward revisions as AI infrastructure spending continues.

Another reading, held by Barclays, is that revenue growth will come with thinner margins, which would make the earnings outlook harder to reach than the sales outlook.

The data that would settle it

First-quarter gross margin is the most direct test of the Barclays view. If margins hold near recent levels while sales track the run rate, the higher targets gain support. If sales hold but margins compress, the earnings outlook comes into question even without a revenue miss.
