Oil and the Fed Trade the Calendar | Diesel Sat Out Crude's Jump | Two AI Beats Got Sold

WTI is back above $100 on a reported post-midterm timetable, and traders treat December, not today, as the Fed's live meeting. Heating oil barely moved, so the refining margin narrowed. Seagate and Teradyne beat and guided higher, and both were quoted lower.

// THE TAPE
// FIRST LIGHT

Good morning. Two markets woke up staring at the same calendar.

Oil traders put back a war premium after a report about what might happen once the midterms pass. Fed watchers stopped asking about today and started asking about December.

Neither event has happened. Both are already in prices. Tonight two of the biggest AI spenders report into a chip trade that wants more than a beat.

Our call is below.

// THE SETUP

Oil and the Fed are both pricing dates, which should keep the front end of the bond market from relaxing on a hold

December WTI was near $101.40 early Wednesday, up about 1.5%, after two days of declines on Iran diplomacy. Traders weighed two catalysts, and neither is confirmed. The newer one is a Wall Street Journal report, citing people briefed, that Washington told Gulf states to prepare for a short, intense campaign after the Nov. 3 midterms. President Trump has not made a final decision, according to accounts of the report. Yemen's Houthis said Tuesday that a missile hit Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery, and Saudi Arabia has not confirmed damage.

The move stayed in crude. Heating oil barely moved, which is not what lost refining capacity usually produces. On Polymarket, the ceasefire contract through Oct. 31 rose to 95.5 cents while the Nov. 15 contract fell to 50.5 cents. Traders appear to be pricing a window after the election, not an incident this week.

The mechanism runs through inflation. Half an hour before New Zealand held rates by one vote, Australia's monthly inflation rose to 4.3%, with fuel up 9.4% in September alone. Even New Zealand's majority said tighter policy is "likely." Central banks can look through a fuel spike, meaning ignore it if it fades, or move before it spreads into wages and services.

The Fed decides at 2 p.m. Kalshi's contract on a hike today trades near 5 cents, but traders put a December hike near 79%. The 2-year yield, the one most tied to Fed policy, was near 4.75%, up 1 basis point, or a hundredth of a percentage point. Private credit is also finding ways to return cash to older funds. KKR closed its first private credit continuation vehicle, letting investors in a lending fund that finished raising in 2017 sell or roll their stakes, PitchBook reported. The price was not disclosed.

What would change the read is a dovish press conference. If Chair Warsh treats December as open rather than live, the 2-year should fall. A Saudi statement of no damage, or a large crude build in the morning's inventory data, would test oil's premium first.

> SAVANTS SIGNAL

The call is that the oil premium and the December hike both survive the day. Expect December WTI to settle above $100. Expect the 2-year Treasury yield to close at or above 4.74% on CNBC's basis, as a hold that keeps December live leaves the front end firm. Position for a market that prices dates before decisions.

// UNDER THE INDEX

Tuesday's gain was narrow. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% while the equal-weight version rose 0.1%, as chip stocks gained almost 4%. Energy fell 2% on a day Brent dropped 1.7%. About six in ten members sit above their 50-day average, so the base is sound even when a day's leadership is thin.

The group worth your attention is the retail broker. Robinhood Markets (HOOD) now earns more from event contracts, its prediction-market product, than from crypto. It booked $173 million from event contracts while crypto revenue fell 55% to $120 million. Adjusted earnings of 60 cents, a new measure, missed S&P Global's 64-cent consensus but topped other forecasts. Net income fell 14% and credit provisions nearly tripled. The stock was quoted about 8% lower.

The drop cannot be pinned on crypto alone, with interest income down and credit costs up in the same report. Coinbase (COIN) was quoted about 1% lower, with bitcoin near $81,400. Coinbase reports Thursday.

> SAVANTS SIGNAL

Brokers that earn on activity are trading one volatile revenue line for another, and the market is pricing the profit, not the mix. Read Coinbase's October trading commentary on Thursday before treating crypto's slump as over.

// THE BARREL

Spread of the day. The diesel crack, front-month heating oil minus December WTI per barrel, narrowed to about $92.90 from $94.00 at Tuesday's settles. Its 50-day average is about $105. A hit to Gulf refining would usually widen it, because products would get scarcer than crude. Instead, the premium sits in crude alone, which fits a market pricing timing risk rather than lost supply.

> SAVANTS SIGNAL

A crude-only premium squeezes refiners first and reaches diesel buyers, from truckers to airlines, only later. A crack settling above $96 would suggest products are starting to price real damage. Below $92, the bet stays on the calendar.

The signal. Seagate Technology (STX) and Teradyne (TER) both beat and guided above forecasts after Tuesday's close, and both stocks fell. Seagate grew revenue 61% and guided well above estimates. Teradyne grew 70% but was flat from the prior quarter. Seagate was quoted about 2% lower and Teradyne about 3% lower. SK Hynix rose nearly 11% in Seoul on its record quarter.

So what. Borrowers still want the AI build-out. Euro-area banks tightened lending again, and the one category with rising demand was loans for AI infrastructure. Equity buyers are pickier. Meta Platforms (META) closed at $620.19, below the $625 price of its $25 billion stock sale. Borrowed shares sold under its forward deals are reaching the market this week. Investors appear to reward upside surprises in memory and ask more of results already near the top of forecasts.

Frontier watch. Three things still to come. Capital spending plans from Microsoft and Alphabet (GOOGL) after the close. SK Hynix's explanation of a roughly 43.5 trillion won gap between operating and net profit. And Meta's share-sale settlement on Thursday.

The tell. Meta's close against its $625 offer price. A close above $625 means the new supply has been absorbed. Below $610, the overhang is still selling. Between them, the market is undecided.

Exposed. STX, TER, MU, WDC, META, GOOGL
