The memory maker reports after the bell with analysts' revenue forecast sitting above the top of its own guidance range.
Micron Technology reports fiscal fourth-quarter results after Wednesday's close, and the bar investors have set is higher than the one the company set for itself.
When it last reported, Micron told investors to expect sales between $49 billion and $51 billion this quarter, adjusted profit of $30 to $32 a share and an adjusted gross margin of about 86%. Analysts now expect $31.83 a share on revenue of $51.49 billion.
Above the ceiling
That revenue estimate is the number to focus on. The top of Micron's guided range is $51 billion. The consensus sits about $490 million above it. On earnings, the forecast is 2.7% above the midpoint of guidance. Put simply, the market is not asking whether Micron can hit its targets. It is assuming the company will clear the upper end of them.
The expected mix shows where the growth is coming from. Analysts forecast $38.22 billion from DRAM and $12.29 billion from NAND flash storage, which puts DRAM at roughly three quarters of total revenue. That concentration means the DRAM line, more than storage, will decide whether the quarter clears the bar.
A trillion-dollar setup
The stakes are unusual for a memory company. A 279% run in the shares since January has lifted Micron's market value above $1 trillion. A comparable increase in market capitalization would imply a starting value near $264 billion, before allowing for changes in the share count.
Option prices imply the stock could swing as much as 11% either way once the numbers are out. On a $1 trillion company, that is more than $100 billion of value riding on one report.
What would move the stock
With revenue expectations already above guidance, a result merely inside the range could disappoint. The more important numbers may be forward-looking: the fiscal first-quarter outlook, commentary on how long tight DRAM supply lasts, and whether an 86% gross margin is a peak or a plateau. A guide that implies margins holding near that level would support the view that AI demand has changed the economics of memory. A guide that implies easing would revive old worries about the industry's boom-and-bust cycle.
What to watch
Results after the close, with management's call at 4:30 p.m. ET. The first-quarter revenue guide relative to $51.49 billion will likely set the stock's direction.
