The HYPE treasury company raised its repurchase authorization to $100 million from $30 million and extended it to October 2027. About $72 million remains available.

A company built to hold a token is now putting more of its money behind its own stock.

Hyperliquid Strategies Inc., a Nasdaq-listed company that holds Hyperliquid's HYPE token, said on Friday that its board raised its stock repurchase authorization to up to $100 million from $30 million, with about $72 million still available. It extended the program's expiration to Oct. 31, 2027, from Dec. 5, 2026. Purchases may be made in the open market or in privately negotiated deals, at management's discretion.

The figures imply the company had used about $28 million of the earlier authorization.

Where the shares stand

The stock closed Friday at $8.78, up 1.2%. That is about 40% below its 52-week high of $14.76 and below its 50-day average of $11.20, though well above its 52-week low of $3.01. The company's market value is about $1.18 billion.

HYPE traded at about $75.59 on Saturday morning, roughly 23% below its high for the year.

Buying the company instead of the token

Digital-asset treasury companies were created to raise money from stock investors and use it to buy tokens. When their shares trade at a premium to the value of their holdings, issuing stock to buy more tokens increases holdings per share.

When the premium shrinks or disappears, the math reverses. Buying back stock becomes the cheaper way to raise each share's claim on the underlying tokens. A larger buyback program is a sign that management sees its own shares as the better purchase.

Hyperliquid Strategies did not disclose its current HYPE holdings or net asset value per share alongside the announcement, so the size of any discount cannot be calculated from the release.

The move follows a similar turn at Strategy, the largest corporate bitcoin holder, which has repurchased some of its preferred stock.

Value or warning

One reading is that the buyback is accretive and disciplined: if the shares trade below the value of the tokens behind them, repurchasing them adds value for remaining shareholders.

Another reading is that it is a defensive signal that the token-accumulation model has stalled, since money spent on buybacks is money not spent on HYPE.

A third is that the program is small relative to the swings in the token itself. If the company's HYPE holdings are worth more than about $720 million, a 10% move in the token would change their value by more than the remaining buyback capacity.

What to watch

Disclosures of shares repurchased and of the company's HYPE holdings, the stock's discount or premium to its token holdings, and whether other treasury companies follow with buybacks.
