Eligible investors can contribute bitcoin, ether, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Avalanche, Chainlink, Hyperliquid, Sui or Zcash directly for fund shares. Grayscale lists approximate minimums as of Oct. 20, which are subject to change without notice.

A person holding a large amount of Solana can now trade it for shares in a regulated fund without selling it first. The price of admission explains who the offer is for.

Grayscale announced on Wednesday that it is "providing eligible investors with the ability to participate in-kind to select Grayscale products." Through the in-kind route, eligible investors "can contribute an underlying digital asset directly in exchange for shares of a Grayscale product, rather than first selling the asset for fiat currency and making a cash investment." The offer covers 10 products.

The minimums

Grayscale lists approximate minimum investment amounts as of Oct. 20, and says they are subject to change without notice. The Solana product (GSOL) requires $80,300 or more, Dogecoin (GDOG) $95,550, Chainlink (GLNK) $107,900 and Sui (GSUI) $148,400. The Ethereum Staking Mini product requires $232,300, Avalanche (GAVA) $235,800, XRP (GXRP) $257,000, Hyperliquid (HYPG) $282,600 and Zcash (ZCSH) $322,600. The Bitcoin Mini Trust is the highest at $364,800.

The lowest minimum, for the Solana fund, is about $80,300, and the highest, for the Bitcoin Mini Trust, is about $364,800. Those levels point toward funds, treasury companies and wealthy individuals holding tokens, not ordinary retail investors.

Why it matters

For a holder with an existing position, the appeal is moving into a regulated wrapper without a cash sale. Grayscale says in-kind investing can lighten the burden of self-custody, may lower execution costs and can make portfolio integration easier. It comes after the Securities and Exchange Commission allowed in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto exchange-traded products. Grayscale's release says tax treatment is uncertain and that contributions may trigger taxable events, particularly for assets other than a fund's underlying token, and it tells clients to consult tax advisers.

The list reaches well beyond bitcoin and ether. Funds tracking Zcash, Hyperliquid and Sui are included.

Three readings

One reading is that this is a flow catalyst for smaller-asset funds. Holders who would not sell tokens for cash may be willing to exchange them for fund shares, and that can add assets to products that have struggled to grow.

A second reading is that it is plumbing. The offer is most useful to existing holders and large participants, and it may mostly rearrange holdings that already exist.

A third reading is competitive. Other fund managers are likely to offer similar routes, so any advantage could be short-lived.

What to watch

Grayscale's reported assets in the 10 funds over the coming weeks; whether rivals announce in-kind programs; changes to the minimums; and flows into the smaller-asset funds relative to bitcoin and ether products. A visible jump in assets at the Zcash or Hyperliquid funds would show the offer drawing in token holders.
