Diesel Hits a Record $6.40 Before a Coin-Flip Fed Vote | The BOJ Hiked and the Yen Fell Anyway | Hackers Used Claude to Breach OpenAI

Mortgages are near 7%, the misery index just topped its pre-election-loss level, and a hawkish Fed and a dovish BOJ just widened the gap that funds the yen carry trade.

THE NUMBER

7.5.

The misery index, inflation plus unemployment, versus 6.7 the last time it ran this high before the incumbent party lost on the cost of living. It's the number the Fed's timing bet gets judged against, seven weeks out.

THE SETUP

Voters go to the polls in seven weeks.

The economy's answer to whether anything has gotten better is no. The 30-year mortgage rate hit 6.95% this week. Diesel hit a record $6.40 a gallon. Wednesday's Fed hike targeted a war premium it cannot reach. Friday, the Bank of Japan hiked too, and oil traders still cannot find a ceiling.

PMD LENS

Every story below is the same timing problem, showing up somewhere new. A rate hike's cost lands on households before its benefit does. A rate hike can weaken a currency when markets doubt it. A frontier AI model's power spreads to three researchers with a subscription before it spreads any safety net. An AI boom's real limit turns out to be electricity, not chips.

IN FOCUS

The Hawkish Hike Is Landing on Voters Before It Lands on Inflation

Everything from a mortgage to a gas tank costs more than it did a week ago, right before the midterms. Consumer prices rose 3.4% in August. Wages have trailed inflation for five months. Diesel hit that record $6.40, up from $3.71 a year ago.

Futures price roughly a coin flip on another hike in October, a week before Election Day, and most Fed officials expect one more increase this year. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh says taming inflation helps the poorest households most, but by his own framing, costs rise first. That lag runs about a year. Voters feel the cost long before they feel any relief. Dollar General's chief executive said even $100,000 earners now act like lower-income shoppers.

JPMorgan's oil analysts say they can no longer model where this ends. Every red line they expected to hold has already broken: oil above $100, gas near $5, a surging 10-year yield. They peg oil's fair value near $90. It trades near $106, pricing in another 4 million barrels a day of lost supply. The assumption that the disruption is temporary, they wrote, is getting harder to sustain.

Costs Come First

A rate hike bets that inflation is temporary enough to fight without breaking the economy first. A second hike in October means the Fed will have raised borrowing costs twice into a shock it cannot source and cannot stop. The people paying for it vote a week later.

SIGNALS IN MOTION

SIGNAL 1: The BOJ Hiked to a 31-Year High, and the Yen Fell Anyway

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% Friday, a 31-year high and its fastest pace since 1990, in a 7-2 vote. The yen fell as much as 0.6% anyway, because the two dissents told markets the BOJ still will not keep pace with the Fed. Wells Fargo called it not hawkish enough for markets. Strategists see dollar-yen climbing toward 160, a level that would revive intervention risk after Japan's record 15.4 trillion yen ($98 billion) August intervention.

The Carry-Trade Tell

A rate hike that weakens its own currency only happens when the market decides the move was too timid. That is what markets just decided about the BOJ. Wednesday's hawkish Fed hike and Friday's dovish-reading BOJ hike just widened the rate gap that funds the yen carry trade. That is the same trade behind Japan's record August intervention.

SIGNAL 2: Hackers Used Anthropic's Claude to Break Into OpenAI, With Three People and a Subscription

Independent researchers used Claude to reach an OpenAI employee's account, and from there Monorepo, the code repository holding OpenAI's algorithmic secrets. A bug Anthropic's prior model could not exploit fell to Claude Opus 5 overnight. "We're just three guys with Claude and Codex subscriptions," the lead researcher said. Comparable access reportedly sells online for as little as $800. OpenAI pulled a quarter of its engineers onto defense.

The hack lands the same week Palantir (PLTR) chief executive Alex Karp told CNBC that frontier AI labs may need to be nationalized, because the liability from AI's "unlimited risks," he said, is uninsurable.

The Weapon and the Target

A frontier model just breached a frontier lab, using three people and a subscription rather than a nation-state's budget. That is the capability-diffusion problem already here, not a forecast of one. It makes Karp's nationalization talk sound less like hyperbole and more like a company already pricing an uninsurable risk.

SIGNAL 3: Enhanced Geothermal Emerges as AI's Dark-Horse Power Source, With a $135 Million Raise

Khosla-backed Mazama Energy raised $135 million to drill deeper into super-hot-rock geothermal, after revising its Oregon site's potential up to 10 gigawatts, from 5. ConocoPhillips (COP) and Shell Ventures joined the round. The raise lands the same week Nvidia (NVDA) chief executive Jensen Huang said the company expects to sell twice as many chips next year, on projected revenue growth to roughly $673 billion.

The Real Bottleneck

Huang is doubling chip sales into a buildout whose real limit is not chips, it is the power to run them. An oil major backing a geothermal driller, instead of a data center, is capital already betting on which layer of the AI trade is actually scarce.

TRUMP’S NEW DOLLAR

Republican or Democrat – whether you support or oppose Trump’s New Dollar – every American could soon be forced to use it

Discover three critical moves to help you prepare, before it’s too late

THE PLAYBOOK

The Fed's next rate decision: October 28, a week before Election Day. The Trump-Xi summit: September 24. The BOJ's next policy decision: late October, the next dollar-yen test.

CAPITAL DISCIPLINE

Four stories, one mispriced assumption each. A hike calms inflation without a cost voters notice before Election Day. A hike defends a currency instead of exposing weak conviction. AI capability spreads to three researchers with a subscription, not only to safe hands. An AI boom's real limit is electricity, not chips, and an oil major already bets that way. Each assumption fails the same way: something treated as settled was priced for a world that no longer exists.

PMD REPOSITION

The affordability squeeze, the widening carry-trade gap, the AI-safety breach, and the power bottleneck are four faces of one timing problem. The world already repriced what a hawkish cycle and an AI boom actually cost. The belief that a hike defends without cost, that capability stays contained, that chips alone gate the buildout, did not reprice with it. That gap, between what changed and what people still believe, is where the next surprise comes from.
