Canada Tariffs Live | Nvidia Price Hike | Bond Rout Continues | Moderna Math Check

Canada talks collapsed and 50% tariffs took effect. Nvidia hiked server prices and bought an AI model startup. The bond intervention unwound. Moderna's math doesn't add up.

MARKET PULSE

Futures Are Lower. Oil Dropped. The Week Opens With Real Stakes.

Nasdaq futures fell sharply. S&P 500 and Dow futures are lower. WTI dropped after six straight sessions of gains. Bessent is expected to outline a plan to impose economic pressure on Iran at a press conference today. Bitcoin held near $78,000. Gold extended gains above $4,700.

Tech stocks fell in Asia overnight. Alibaba (BABA) launched a $10 billion share sale at a steep discount to fund AI spending. Samsung fell sharply despite announcing its largest-ever buyback. The Canadian dollar weakened after trade talks collapsed late Friday.

Investor Signal

Nvidia reports Wednesday. Warsh speaks at Jackson Hole on Friday. PCE also lands Wednesday. Canada tariffs took effect at midnight. Iran economic sanctions details arrive today. The market is starting the week lower into all of it.

Wall Street Just Got a Warning About AI

Nvidia's credit default swaps saw their biggest one-day jump on record, with the company losing $250 billion in market value.

Investors are starting to realize that AI needs more than chips.

It needs real human data.

That's where Mode Mobile has quietly built its edge.

Mode's EarnOS rewards users for everyday smartphone activity, creating a vast ecosystem of opted-in, first-party data with applications across advertising, commerce, and AI.

While others build AI infrastructure, Mode is building the data layer that powers it.

Their traction is hard to ignore:

●490M+ total users

●100M+ monthly active users

●$115M+ cumulative revenue

●$100M+ invested

Deloitte named Mode the #1 fastest-growing software company in North America after 32,481% 3-year revenue growth in 2023.

TRADE WATCH

Canada Talks Collapsed at 11:30 PM Friday. Tariffs Took Effect at Midnight.

Talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed before midnight Friday. Tariffs of 50 percent on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect immediately. Canada will impose dollar-for-dollar countertariffs on U.S. steel, dairy, and appliances starting September 8.

The deal that nearly closed would have cut steel and aluminum tariffs from 50 to 25 percent and autos from 25 to 15 percent. Commerce Secretary Lutnick pushed harder on downstream aluminum. The sectoral agreement unraveled over quotas and product carve-outs. Last-minute U.S. demands on French-language protections and Canada's trade deal rights ended it.

Steel and metals rallied Wednesday on the near-deal. That trade reverses today.

The Reversal Signal

  • Steel and metals names that rallied on the near-deal unwind those gains
  • Canada countertariffs hit U.S. steel, dairy, and appliances September 8
  • Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) face Canadian supply chain exposure on truck carve-outs
  • The USMCA review is next, and Canada just showed it will walk

The Negotiation Ceiling Signal

The deal did not fail on the headline numbers. Both sides agreed to 25 and 15 percent. It collapsed on sectoral detail. The fine print is where every remaining trade negotiation now lives.

CHIP WATCH

Nvidia Told Customers Server Prices Are Rising More Than 15 Percent.

Nvidia (NVDA) notified its largest customers that server prices are rising more than 15 percent, effective on systems shipping early next year. The increases cover flagship Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell systems. Data center operators including Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Oracle (ORCL) were notified in recent days.

The driver is DRAM. Memory makers have not caught up with demand. Nvidia carries a 75 percent gross margin and still could not absorb the increase. Apple (AAPL) and Qualcomm (QCOM) have both recently flagged chip shortages forcing price increases. Nvidia reports Wednesday.

The most profitable company in semiconductors cannot hold the line on input costs. Gross margin guidance Wednesday is the single number that decides how the print is read.

The Margin Signal

Gross margin guidance Wednesday is the single most important number in the report. Memory makers now hold pricing power over the entire AI buildout stack. Hyperscaler in-house silicon programs depend on the same constrained memory supply.

AI CEO Issues Code Red: Prepare for Meltdown

The CEO of this AI company (click here to get the name, 100% free) just issued a CODE RED in an internal memo…

Warning his employees that they’re dealing with a critical situation.

Another company executive even implied they might need a government bailout.

And now Jim Rickards is predicting this company is about to go bust, in a full-blown AI meltdown that could be 10 times bigger than Lehman Brothers.

AI WATCH

Nvidia Paid $6 Billion for Poolside to Compete With DeepSeek and Its Own Customers.

Nvidia will pay $6 billion to license Poolside's technology and hire most of its engineers. The goal is an open-weight model competitive with DeepSeek and Kimi K3, a direct challenge to OpenAI and Anthropic.

Nvidia is raising hardware prices for hyperscaler customers and building a model that competes with those same customers. It sells compute regardless of which model wins. Building the open-weight alternative keeps it relevant even if proprietary frontier models lose share to cheaper options.

Poolside failed to raise $2 billion last year and lost a 40,000 chip cluster. Compute access is the filter that decides which labs survive. Nvidia controls it.

The Open Weight Signal

Chinese open-weight models hold more than 60 percent of open-router traffic at roughly a third of Western frontier pricing. Nvidia is not defending frontier pricing. It is building the American open-weight alternative and owning the hardware underneath it.

RATES WATCH

The 30-Year Is Near a 19-Year High. The Buyback Intervention Fully Unwound.

The 30-year Treasury closed Friday near 5.28 percent. The 10-year sat near 4.74 percent. Bessent's Wednesday buyback announcement is now fully priced out. Brandywine Global's Tracy Chen said the bond vigilantes still do not believe him.

The federal deficit is near $1.8 trillion so far this fiscal year. Net interest payments are expected to exceed $1 trillion for fiscal 2026. Bessent speaks today on Iran. Warsh speaks at Jackson Hole on Friday. PCE lands Wednesday.

Treasury says the long end has a liquidity problem. Warsh says the market should tell the Fed what to do. Those are incompatible positions sitting in the same room at Jackson Hole on Friday.

The Jackson Hole Signal

PCE landing hours before Nvidia is the first real test. Warsh on Friday is the second. The $1.8 trillion deficit sets the actual supply. Nothing last week touched that number.

BIOTECH WATCH

The Moderna Math Does Not Support the Move.

Moderna (MRNA) rose over 100 percent Wednesday, adding roughly $35 billion in market cap. Moderna, Merck (MRK), and BioNTech (BNTX) together added roughly $80 billion in days. Moderna gave back more than 20 percent Thursday.

A Leerink analyst modeled the therapy at low-single-digit billions in annual sales by 2032. A bull case of $10 billion in peak sales supports roughly $40 billion in added value across both companies. The market added nearly double that in one afternoon.

Melanoma responds well to immunotherapy and has a high mutation count. Kidney and bladder cancers are harder. The treatment works in melanoma specifically. Whether the rest of the pipeline follows is the actual question.

The Platform Validation Signal

  • Full trial data presentation later this year is the next real test
  • Kidney and bladder readouts are the actual platform stress test
  • Manufacturing is personalized per patient with costs potentially near $300,000
  • The biology that made melanoma work is specific to melanoma. The market priced a platform.

The Category Error Signal

A validated result in one domain gets priced as proof of a platform. Moderna gave back more than 20 percent the very next session. The market started checking its own assumptions almost immediately.

CLOSING LENS

Canada tariffs took effect at midnight and the reversal begins. Nvidia enters its report having pre-announced a price hike it is passing through rather than absorbing. It also bought a model startup that competes with its own largest customers. The bond buyback fully unwound and Bessent speaks on Iran today. A sell-side desk found Moderna's $80 billion move worth roughly $40 billion in the bull case.

PCE and Nvidia both land Wednesday. Warsh speaks Friday. The cost absorbed quietly for years is now passing through visibly. The market is checking the math.
