BOJ’s Hike and the Yen’s fall. That Is the Opposite of What Tokyo Wanted.
The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, the highest level since 1995. The decision was 7-2, with two board members voting against the hike. The yen dropped more than 1% on the split decision. A dollar now buys around 157.8 yen, erasing much of September's gains.
Futures are pointing slightly higher. Nasdaq futures are up 0.5%. S&P futures gained modestly. The Nikkei closed 1.4% higher and Korea's Kospi surged 2.7%. WTI held just above $101, continuing its retreat from this week's highs.
The week ends with the Nasdaq on track for a slight gain while the Dow and S&P finish lower.
Market Implication
Two dissenters at the BOJ sent the signal that future hikes are not guaranteed. That is why the yen fell on a hike. The carry trade, where investors borrow cheap yen to fund higher-yielding assets, stays attractive when the pace of BOJ tightening looks uncertain. Watch whether the yen stabilizes or keeps weakening heading into next week.

The BOJ Hiked but the Yen Dropped. Two Words Explain It: Dovish Dissenters.
The two board members who voted against the hike, Toichiro Asada and Ayano Sato, were appointed by Prime Minister Takaichi and are seen as reflationists who believe Japan needs looser policy. Their dissent sent a message to markets that the pace of future hikes is uncertain.
ING's Frantisek Taborsky said the dissenters may increasingly act as a brake on further tightening. When a central bank hikes rates but signals it cannot keep hiking, the currency associated with that carry trade does not appreciate. It falls.
This is the specific dynamic Tokyo and Washington have been trying to solve all year. They conducted a coordinated intervention to prop up the yen in July. That intervention cost Japan over $70 billion in reserves. The yen hit a new monthly high at 153.54 on September 11. It is now back above 157.
Japan's August inflation held steady at 1.9%. Core-core inflation, which strips food and energy, also stayed at 1.9%. The BOJ has the data to justify hikes. The committee does not have the unanimous will to follow through.
Structural Setup
The yen carry trade survived the BOJ hike because of the dissenters. Watch next month's BOJ statement language for any sign that Asada and Sato are being isolated or that the majority is signaling confidence in further tightening. That language shift would be the real yen catalyst.
Chip Stocks Led Thursday's Rebound. Intel CEO Comments on Memory Prices Drove It.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose 3.1% Thursday after Intel (INTC) CEO Lip-Bu Tan commented at an event about soaring memory prices. Intel jumped more than 8%. The full AI infrastructure trade came with it. Marvell Technology (MRVL) gained 4.5%. Lam Research (LRCX) rose 4%. Corning (GLW) climbed 4%.
The narrative driving the bounce is the same one that has driven the market all year. AI investment from hyperscalers is not slowing down. Memory prices rising is a signal that demand is outpacing supply, not the other way around.
Invesco's Brian Levitt framed the session precisely. The cycle ends when a hyperscaler pulls back on AI investment or the market decides the return on that investment is too low. Neither of those things happened this week.

The AI trade absorbed a Fed hike, a BOJ hike, a Bank of England hold, five days of elevated oil, and an AI slowdown debate from the companies themselves. It came back on Thursday with one of its strongest sessions in six weeks. That resilience is the tape's most important signal of the week.

Lockheed Is on Track to Build 2,000 Patriot Missiles Next Year. The Production Ramp Is Real.
Lockheed Martin (LMT) CEO Jim Taiclet said at Morgan Stanley's investor conference that the company is running ahead of schedule on tripling Patriot missile production. He expects to build 2,000 missiles next year.
The PAC-3 MSE missile costs more than $4 million apiece. Lockheed clinched a $59 billion contract earlier this year to produce more of them. The US fired 60 to 70 Patriots in a single week to defend assets during a recent Iranian attack. Shortages have limited American options against Iran and left Ukraine exposed to Russian strikes simultaneously.
Taiclet said international demand is significant and the US government is currently deciding which allied buyers get what. The massive orders will shift Lockheed's revenue mix toward missiles over the next several years.
Watch Signal
Watch Lockheed's next quarterly report for the share of missile revenue relative to aviation and space. That shift in mix tells you how committed the company is to the Patriot ramp and how much of the $59 billion contract has started flowing through earnings.
Binance Failed to Get a Europe-Wide License. The ECB Intervened Directly.
Binance's push for a single European crypto license fell through after ECB President Christine Lagarde intervened. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao posted that it was "sad to see the EU cutting their users off from the best liquidity in the world."
The failure lands in a specific context. The SEC opened tokenized stock trading in the US earlier this week. Congress failed to pass the Clarity Act. The ECB blocked Binance's European expansion. Three major crypto regulatory events in one week, each pointing in a different direction.
In the US, the SEC moved without waiting for Congress. In Europe, the ECB moved to block without waiting for a legislative process.
The result is a fractured global regulatory framework where crypto companies face completely different rules depending on jurisdiction. Binance operating in some European countries under national licenses but not a pan-European one is the specific outcome of Lagarde's intervention.
The Read
The divergence between US and EU crypto regulation is now explicit. The SEC opened a door in the US the same week the ECB closed one in Europe. Any crypto exchange with significant European exposure is navigating a regulatory environment where the largest central bank in the EU is actively pushing back.
