MARKET PULSE

Two Central Banks Hiked. Neither Touched the Thing Doing the Damage.

Asia had a good session. Japan's Nikkei rose after the BOJ hiked. South Korea's Kospi surged. Mainland China and Hong Kong both gained. European stocks pulled back. US futures opened flat to slightly higher after Thursday's sharp rally.

Fed Governor Bowman and Kansas City Fed President Schmid speak today. Markets want clarity on the December path after a unanimous hike Wednesday produced more questions than it answered.

The Dow is on pace for its third straight losing week. The S&P 500 barely held positive for the week. The Nasdaq is the only index showing a weekly gain, carried by Thursday's AI-led rally.

Investor Signal

Invesco's Brian Levitt put the real risk directly. The AI trade ends when a hyperscaler pulls back on investment or the market decides the returns will not justify the spend. Higher Fed funds rates and oil prices will not end it. That framing tells you why Nasdaq outperformed a week the Dow lost ground three days running. Two different markets are trading simultaneously right now.

Buy This $5 Stock Before Elon Musk Does

Rumors are spreading quickly...

Elon is gearing up to buy a tiny, publicly traded company.

Why? Because it holds the exclusive rights to a $16 trillion MOTHERLODE of the exact materials his empire runs on... rare metals like cobalt, manganese and lithium.

On January 1st, a new Pentagon rule cuts off his Chinese supply.

Today, it's a $5 stock... but once Elon makes his move, it could soar to $50 within 6 months.

CENTRAL BANK WATCH

BOJ Hiked to a 31-Year High. The Yen Fell Anyway.

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25 percent, its highest since 1995. The vote was 7-2. Both dissenters are the most dovish members of the board, recently appointed by Prime Minister Takaichi. Every economist surveyed ahead of the decision expected the move.

The yen fell. Wells Fargo called the outcome not hawkish enough. Two dovish dissents signal a limit on pace. The market read the vote split as a ceiling, not a floor.

Two central banks in three days delivered exactly what was priced and got the opposite reaction. The Fed hiked and the 10-year climbed while Warsh spoke. Both were expected. Neither changed anything underneath.

When Priced-In Becomes a Problem

  • A fully priced hike carries no new information
  • The vote split carries all of it in this environment
  • Two dovish dissents read as a limit on BOJ's pace

Strategists see 160 yen per dollar if the BOJ falls further behind the Fed. Intervention risk returns at that level. Japan spent a record amount on yen support in a single month during the summer.

Carry Trade Gets a Reprieve

A yen drifting back toward 160 makes yen-funded long positions in US tech cheaper to hold. The unwind that was supposed to happen when the BOJ hiked got a delay instead. Governor Ueda's press conference is the next input on pace.

OIL WATCH

JPMorgan Says Every Red Line It Assumed Washington Would Defend Has Been Crossed.

JPMorgan's commodities team put it on paper. Fair value for oil is around $90. The market is near $106. Traders are pricing an additional 4 million barrels a day of supply losses on top of the 10 million already disrupted.

Oil above $100, gasoline near $5, and surging Treasury yields were all thresholds JPMorgan assumed the administration would not tolerate. All three crossed. The exit strategy is unclear.

Saudi Arabia started moving crude via ship-to-ship transfers near Sohar, Oman. WTI fell back toward $101. The pipeline still has no confirmed repair timeline.

A $16 Premium With No Clear Catalyst to Close It

September 24 is the next scheduled catalyst. Trump and Xi meet in Washington. A summit that produces nothing on Iran removes the last item on the diplomatic calendar. Ship-to-ship transfers ease the pressure but do not close the gap.

TRADE WATCH

Container Rates Are Within Striking Distance of the Pandemic Record.

The spot rate from China to the US East Coast hit nearly $11,000 per 40-foot container, more than quadrupling since February. Drewry's Shanghai-to-New York index rose sharply week over week. Both are just below the pandemic record set in January 2022.

The driver is fuel. Bunker fuel averaged over $900 per metric ton, up sharply from before the war and still below the March peak. Carriers pass the cost through surcharges. As bunker prices climb, so does the surcharge, and the pandemic record becomes reachable.

Golden Week is the near-term pressure point. Walmart (WMT) and Amazon (AMZN) are among shippers rushing goods out of China before factories close in early October.

Demand Plus Cost Is a Different Problem

  • Golden Week demand surge on top of fuel-driven surcharges is a compounding hit
  • Pandemic spike was demand and cleared when demand eased; this one is a cost
  • Cost shocks clear only when the underlying fuel cost does

Surcharges trail bunker prices with a lag. When fuel falls, surcharges follow. Until then, this lands in October and November goods prices on top of diesel pass-through already in the supply chain.

Freight Is the Diesel Story in a Second Form

The CBO said fuel carries 40 percent of the war's inflation effect. Container surcharges are the same cost with a different label.

CYBERSECURITY WATCH

Three Researchers Used Claude to Read OpenAI's Source Code.

Researchers at Hacktron AI used Anthropic's Claude to exploit a bug and gain access to an OpenAI employee's ChatGPT account. From there they reached OpenAI's private GitHub repositories, including a codebase described as containing the algorithmic secrets behind its models.

On July 23 the exploit failed. Anthropic released a new model that evening. By the next morning it worked. A model update turned a dead end into a breach in under 24 hours.

They were in OpenAI's bug bounty program and reported it immediately. OpenAI confirmed limited reads of private code. Three people with consumer subscriptions did this. The same tooling is available to anyone.

The Threat Surface Improves on the Vendor's Schedule

Until recently, exploiting security bugs required deep expertise. AI is distributing that capability broadly. OpenAI's response was to divert a quarter of its production engineers to defense. That cost shows up in a quarter when the company is also fundraising.

POLITICAL WATCH

Prices Are 27 Percent Above January 2021. Weeks to the Midterms.

Consumer prices rose year over year in August, extending five straight years of above-target inflation. Wages have trailed prices for five consecutive months. With the gasoline move in September, they will not catch up this month either.

The surface looks contradictory. Unemployment is low. Household net worth hit a record. August retail sales beat.

The lived version is different. Retail diesel hit $6.40. The 30-year mortgage is near 7 percent. Dollar General's (DG) CEO said customers earning $100,000 are shopping like lower-income households.

What Households Are Actually Pricing

  • Wages have trailed prices for five straight months
  • Mortgage rates near their highest since before Trump's first term
  • Misery index above where it stood before the last election

The aggregate data looks fine. The distribution does not. When a discount chain reports six-figure income shoppers trading down, the averages will not show it for another quarter.

The Stantcheva Problem

Many Americans view rate hikes as inflationary because hikes coincide with inflation. A pre-election hike takes a year to reach prices and hits mortgages immediately. That is the October meeting's problem.

CLOSING LENS

Both central banks delivered. Neither moved anything.

The BOJ is at a 31-year high and the yen fell. JPMorgan says the red lines it thought Washington would hold are gone. Container rates are nine percent from a record on fuel surcharges alone. Three people with AI subscriptions reached OpenAI's source code the day after a model update shipped. And prices are 27 percent above where they were at the start of this administration's predecessor's term, with the misery index above where it sat before the last election.

Bowman and Schmid speak today. December is the next vote. Everything between now and then runs through an oil price that JPMorgan says is $16 above fair value.
