U.S. spot bitcoin funds took in about 4% of Monday's total on Tuesday, and ether funds posted a fifth straight day of outflows. Bitcoin edged above Tuesday's high near $83,340 in early Wednesday trading, reaching about $83,600.
Monday's surge into bitcoin funds looked like a turning point. Tuesday's data made it look like a single allocation.
U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds took in a net $23.16 million on Tuesday, according to SoSoValue data, after about $527 million on Monday. That is a drop of about 96%. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust took in $29.86 million and Fidelity's fund $3.58 million, while Bitwise's fund had net outflows of $10.29 million. Total net assets in the funds stood at about $106.28 billion.
Ether funds went the other way. They had net outflows of $26.13 million on Tuesday, led by $33.0 million of redemptions from BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust, their fifth straight day of outflows. October outflows from ether funds now total about $1.08 billion, with money leaving on 13 of 14 trading days. The only inflow day was Oct. 13.
A modest break above the range
Bitcoin was at about $83,270 at 4:46 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, up about 0.4% on the day. It rose from a low near $82,290 in the 3 p.m. hour on Tuesday, drifted between about $82,500 and $83,000 through Asian trading and pushed higher from 3 a.m. The 4 a.m. hour reached about $83,609, above Tuesday's high of about $83,344, and bitcoin was near $83,415 at about 5:38 a.m. The move above the range is small so far and came on light early trading.
Ether was at about $2,455 and Solana about $106.68.
What the flows say
The Monday inflow came almost entirely through one fund, and it did not repeat at scale. By FinancialMarkets.com's arithmetic from the daily data, bitcoin funds remain slightly in net outflow for October even after the two positive days.
Ether's pattern is steadier and more telling. Outflows have continued through rallies and declines alike, which suggests allocation decisions rather than reactions to price.
Crypto equities closed Tuesday with gains, though below their intraday highs. Strategy rose 4.9%, Circle 5.5%, Bitmine Immersion Technologies 5.8% and SharpLink 5.5%. Coinbase gained 1.4%, and the iShares Bitcoin Trust 0.9%.
Market implications
One reading is that a base is forming. Bitcoin funds have now had two straight days of inflows, and the price has made a higher low near $82,300.
A second reading is that the bid is fading. Inflows collapsed after one day, and the early-Wednesday push above $83,344 has been marginal, with $84,000 still overhead.
A third reading is that money is rotating within crypto rather than leaving it, favoring bitcoin over ether.
What to watch
Wednesday's fund flows; whether bitcoin holds above Tuesday's $83,344 high through the U.S. session; ether fund flows for a first inflow day since Oct. 13; results from Tesla and Meta after Wednesday's close; and the Fed meeting. A close above $84,000 alongside inflows above $100 million would challenge the fading-bid reading.
