AI Sends Bills | The Counter Cracked | Winter Oil

Intel's data center sales jumped 78%, and its stock was indicated 25% lower. Binance put a breach at $6.3 billion. Oil for this winter costs $28 more than next winter's.

AI Sends Bills | The Counter Cracked | Winter Oil

Grab a coffee. It's the last trading day of October, and three scares landed overnight. Amazon and Intel fell hard after their reports. The world's biggest crypto exchange disclosed a breach worth billions. Bettors priced in a one-in-three chance of a U.S. strike on Iran, then took most of it back. Three questions. Is the AI boom cracking? Is your crypto safe on an exchange? Is $115 oil here to stay? Today's job is sorting the blips from the keepers.

AI: Is the Boom Cracking?

Amazon Had Its Best Margin Ever. Then It Showed the Bill.

Amazon (AMZN) posted a 13.9% operating margin, its best ever, and AWS grew 39%. The stock was still indicated about 7% lower. Sales, profit and the forecast all landed a touch under estimates. The bigger issue is cash. Over the past year, free cash flow was an outflow of $42.4 billion, as spending on property and equipment jumped $94.8 billion. CEO Andy Jassy signaled 2027 spending will be meaningfully higher.

Intel's Data Center Chips Boomed. Its PC Chips Didn't.

Intel (INTC) beat its own forecast. Data center and AI sales jumped about 78%, its best data center growth in 15 years. Then it guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion, about $1.6 billion below Wall Street. The problem is PCs. Its PC chip sales fell 5%, and rising memory costs are squeezing PC demand. The CFO sees the slowdown lasting at least through mid-2027. An explosion at its Israel plant cuts about $300 million from fourth-quarter revenue. Shares were indicated about 25% lower.

Reddit Grew 53%. It Says Google's AI Answers Cost It Users.

Reddit (RDDT) grew revenue 53% to $895 million and beat on earnings. It still fell about 23% after hours. Its forecast missed, daily users came in at 130.3 million against about 133.7 million expected, and U.S. users fell 2%. CEO Steve Huffman blamed less traffic from Google, as AI answers in search send fewer people to the site.

Big growth. Bigger bills.

Outlier Signal

The room says the AI boom is cracking. Wrong. Demand is still roaring: AWS grew 39% and Intel's data center sales 78%. What's cracking is everything around it. Amazon pays in cash: free cash flow ran $42.4 billion negative over a year. PC demand pays through pricier memory. Reddit pays in lost Google visitors. Our read: AI isn't slowing down. It's sending out bills. The spending sting may fade. The PC and traffic damage looks like a keeper.

THE MOVE

If you own big tech funds, Apple reports Monday after the close. It guided to a 47% to 48% gross margin. A miss blamed on memory costs would back this read. A clean quarter would say the bill stops at PCs.

Crypto: Is Your Money Safe on an Exchange?

Binance Put a Breach at $6.3 Billion. About Half Is Frozen.

Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, put the estimated damage from a breach at about $6.3 billion. That estimate is more than four times the record $1.5 billion Bybit theft. Binance says a hacked engineer's laptop may be to blame. About $3 billion is frozen, helped by Tether and Circle locking about $2.4 billion of their stablecoins. Binance says it will cover all losses and expects withdrawals back within 48 hours. Two analytics firms tie the attack to a North Korea-linked group.

Polymarket Had a Rough Thursday, Too

Polymarket is investigating suspicious bets on Israel's election. Bloomberg found more than 600 brand-new wallets that bet on Netanyahu or his party before polls closed. Bloomberg called its own analysis "far from conclusive." Netanyahu's contract has since slid to 39.5 cents from 44.5. Separately, a hacked vendor forced Polymarket to halt its international exchange for an hour. An estimated $2.7 million was taken, and Polymarket is paying traders back.

Kalshi's Price Nearly Doubled, Criminal Case and All

Kalshi raised $1 billion at a $40 billion valuation, up from $22 billion in May. Sequoia and Wellington co-led. The news landed a day after Utah filed criminal charges against Kalshi and its founders, though Kalshi says the round closed first. No one has been convicted, and Washington is suing Utah on Kalshi's side. That's about 1.8 times May's price for a venue fighting states in court.

The coin wobbled. The counter cracked.

Outlier Signal

The room says the breach shows crypto is broken. Wrong. Bitcoin fell about 4%. It dipped as Amazon and Intel reported, then fell harder once Binance's outflows showed up on-chain. Binance's own coin, BNB, fell more. CoinDesk's sources say big investors are pulling coins off exchanges. Kalshi's backers paid up for a venue with a federal regulator in its corner. Our read: this week's risk sat in the counter, not the coin. The breach looks like a blip. The scrutiny of venues is a keeper.

THE MOVE

If you keep coins on an exchange, watch Binance's 48-hour window, which runs to early Sunday. Withdrawals back on time with fresh proof of reserves would keep this contained. A delay, or the roughly $3.3 billion not yet frozen hitting the market, would not.

Oil: Is $115 Here to Stay?

This Winter's Oil Costs $28 More Than Next Winter's

Brent for December delivery settled at $114.88 on Thursday and is headed for a fourth straight monthly gain. Now look a year out. Early Friday, December Brent traded near $116.45 and December 2027 Brent near $88, a gap of about $28. Traders call that backwardation: buyers pay up for barrels now and expect easier supply later. The December contract expires today, so quoted Brent shifts to January, already a few dollars cheaper.

Bettors Priced a One-in-Three Strike Risk, Then Took It Back

The Polymarket contract on the ceasefire holding through Oct. 31 fell from about 96 cents to 68 cents, roughly a one-in-three chance of a strike by Saturday. It followed Iran's parliament speaker rejecting U.S. outreach and a reported strike-options briefing for President Trump. No strike was reported. By early Friday the contract was back near 91 cents. The low came in a thin market.

BP Cashed the War Premium. Then It Paid Down Debt.

BP (BP) made $8.5 billion of underlying profit last quarter, up $2.7 billion from the second quarter. Fatter refining margins did most of the work. When crude is disrupted, fuels like diesel often get even scarcer. BP used the cash to cut net debt to $13.9 billion from $22.3 billion in three months. Capital spending held near $3 billion. Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) reported results early Friday.

Pricey now. Cheaper later.

Outlier Signal

The room says $115 oil is the new normal. Right but incomplete. It's the new normal for this winter. Futures price oil a year out about a quarter cheaper. Bettors priced in real strike risk, then sold it within hours. BP banked its windfall by paying down debt, not by spending more. Our read: the people with money on the line treat the war premium as a big winter bill, not a permanent one. The catch: bettors still see roughly a coin-flip chance of a strike by Nov. 15.

THE MOVE

If you own energy funds, watch January Brent once it becomes the benchmark, and December 2027. If next year's oil climbs toward this winter's, the shortage is lasting. If Exxon and Chevron bank their cash like BP did, the industry agrees with the curve.
